The Sheik & Volkoff were a pre-match 'heat machine' with the Sheik grabbing the mic and saying 'Russia #1, Iran #1 USA pffft' while Volkoff 'sang the Russian national anthem'. ![]() The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff became a long-term heel team and also enjoyed success as WWF World Tag Team Champions. The Sheik moved into a high-profile feud with Sgt Slaugther which turned Slaughter 'good' and culminated in bloody 'Boot Camp' matches across the territory with Slaughter getting his hand raised. ![]() The Sheik received rematches with Hogan but was unable to regain the title. The Sheik's reign was a transitional one as a month later he was upended by Hulk Hogan. The Sheik returned to the WWF and pulled the upset of upsets when he ended Bob Backlund's 6 year stranglehold on the WWF title. The Sheik enjoyed moderate success, winning the Mid Atlantic title from Jim Brunzell and even a high profile feud with 'fellow heel' Ivan Koloff. The first major victory in his career came at Madison Square Garden where he won a 20-man battle royal with the winner receiving a title match vs the The Sheik wrestled in the NWA for the next few years going from territory to territory.
